The exact detail of a safety case approval process will be dependent on the industry sector and legal framework in which the safety case is prepared. The diagram below provides a simplified overview of a generic process whereby a safety case is approved, so granting permission for implementation to proceed.
The Safety Case Report format in the book is based on the information expected by CAP 1801, which defines a generic assessment method for Safety Case Reports.Â
It is recognised that it is common to assess a sample of additional detailed evidence items from the safety case that would not be expected to be included in the Safety Case Report.
It should be noted that the sole purpose of approving a safety case is to ensure that it presents adequate assurance of the safety of what is proposed. The assurance for other issues (e.g. commercial viability, service performance) is usually demonstrated and approved separately.
